As a team of close friends along with our spouses, who have fished the Crisfield area our whole lives, we’ve decided to plan an event that brings a fresh new edge to the Chesapeake Bay angling community. Our tournament offers a unique format that other tournaments in the area don’t. Anglers will be able to fish anywhere in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in 3 divisions (powerboat, kayak, and kids). They will be able to fish two out of three days, selecting a lay day that best suits them.
We will be judging fish by length instead of weight, allowing anglers to submit their catch by photo rather than having to physically check them in. This will allow us to provide real-time updates on standings, and gives anglers the option to release their fish if they choose. However, we will still have a judging table set up at our Tournament Headquarters for those who prefer to keep their fish and have them judged in person. Releasing fish is by no means mandatory, this is NOT a strict catch/release tournament. We have decided to go this route due to the recent concerns of the striped bass stock. We feel giving anglers this option will aid in doing our part for conservation, while still appealing to all anglers across the region. In addition, it also gives us the ability to include bull sized Red Drum which otherwise could not be included.
*Over slot sized Red Drum must be photo submitted and released in accordance with Maryland state regulations.*
Another quality that separates the Tangier Classic from other local tournaments is the large number of eligible species that we include. Anglers will fish to compile a five-fish stringer over two days of fishing. The eligible species include: Rockfish, slot and over slot sized Red Drum, Cobia, Speckled Trout, Grey Trout, Bluefish, Flounder, Spadefish, Croaker, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Black Drum, and White Perch. We feel by including several species our tournament will appeal to anglers of all skill levels.
Keep in mind that there will be limitations on how stringers can be structured.
Lastly, we are extremely proud to announce that our event has two very important goals.
•We will strive to benefit The Crisfield community as a whole. We intend to create a late-season burst of tourism to the area to help local businesses get one last push before the season winds down.
•The Tangier Classic Committee has decided to reach out and find a local child in need to make a donation. Whether it be medical bills, a scholarship, etc. we want to benefit disadvantaged youth in the Lower Shore community. Sponsorship money and funds from our party on Saturday night will go a long way in benefiting a Lower Shore child in need.
This truly is an event you won't want to miss! We’re going to have a great time and support a great cause. We hope to see you there!
