All Anglers are permitted to fish 2 out of 3 days. Lay Days must be declared by 6:00am the day of by submitting through the Tangier Classic website, the WP Tournaments App or by contacting Lindsay of Coastal Creative Co. via email or via text (443) 827-2051. If your Lay Day is NOT RECEIVED by 6am on any given fishing day you will be considered fishing that day.
Powerboats must launch from Wicomico, Somerset, Worcester (Cedar Hall Ramp ONLY), Dorchester or Accomack Counties. Kayaks may launch from anywhere within the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
*REMINDER* Fishing is only permitted in the bay and its’ TIDAL tributaries. Anglers may not launch from any point upstream/inland of any man made structures which impede access to the Chesapeake Bay, regardless of whether that body of water is tidal or tidally influenced.
*Snakehead and Catfish are eligible in the designated Calcutta’s ONLY*
Light tackle jigging/casting, live or dead bait, light tackle bank trolling, and fly fishing is all permitted. Deep water trolling with inline planers, inline sinkers, down-riggers, planer boards, mojos, parachutes, and other heavy lures over 3oz is NOT permitted. Bait fishermen MUST use non-offset circle hooks when targeting Striped Bass (Rockfish) in accordance with the MD state regulations. Trolling light bucktails, jigs, and spoons is permitted. A maximum of 5 rods may be used when trolling.
Everyone fishing on a Powerboat must be a registered Angler assigned to a team for the tournament (including captain and/or mate on hired charter boats). All registered Anglers or at least 1 team member MUST attend one of the 4 Captain’s meetings to receive their Official Tournament measuring stick, Tournament handbook, and Captain’s bags. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the Captain’s meetings, you must check in with a committee member before fishing. Tournament Officials reserve the right to refuse the registration of any Angler. Kids fishing in the Youth division may fish from a Kayak or Powerboat.
14U Anglers may enter the Powerboat or Kayak/SUP division if they choose by paying the associated fee. Keep in mind that if registered in the Powerboat or Kayak/SUP division, 14U Anglers will be competing against adults.
A fishing team may consist of up to 5 Anglers. All members of a team must always fish from within the same vessel (THIS INCLUDES THE CAPTAIN AND OR MATE ON A HIRED CHARTER). All persons on a registered vessel during fishing tournament hours must be registered in the tournament. Anglers fishing on a team will submit their fish to build their stringer. Anglers fishing in the Kayak or Youth divisions may NOT build a fishing team for the tournament. Anglers fishing in the Youth division will NOT be able to contribute to a Powerboat team’s stringer. Kids cannot fish in two divisions simultaneously.
All Anglers will fish at their own risk/discretion. Tournament Officials reserve the right to cancel any or all fishing days. In the event all three days are not fishable, the tournament will move to the following weekend (Oct 4-6, 2024). If at least one day is fishable, the tournament will continue.
The winners of each division will be decided by the top three two-day (5) fish stringers. A stringer may consist of no more than (3) of any eligible species for a maximum of (5) fish EXCLUDING Black Drum, Cobia, over slot sized Rockfish and over slot sized Red Drum. All eligible species submitted for your stringer must meet legal size requirements per Maryland regulations. Fish must be submitted with the daily identifier visible via one of the following methods:
All stringers, whether submitted by a team or otherwise, will be judged based on Maryland regulation size requirements, Official Tournament Judges will automatically cull your stringer based on submissions received in accordance with tournament rules and Maryland regulations.
Tangier Classic is a hybrid catch/photo tournament. Anglers will have the choice to submit photos of their catch with the daily identifier via the WP Tournaments App, or have their fish physically judged at the American Legion. Anglers may keep their fish or release them. All submissions will be judged based on MD State regulations meaning they must meet the minimum size requirements of a legal fish in MD to qualify. If fishing in VA waters, Anglers must be aware of the VA State regulations when keeping a fish. All photos will be reviewed as they’re submitted. If the graduations of the measuring device are visible, the fish will be measured from that point and adjusted accordingly. Fish will be measured to the nearest 1/8th of an inch. The nose and tail MUST be completely visible. If we cannot determine the length of a submission, it will be disqualified. All photos of fish MUST include the daily photo identifier. If the identifier is not present in the photo it will NOT be accepted. All daily winners will be tentatively announced that day and will be finalized on Sunday after the protest period has ended.
In the event of a tie, the Angler with the next largest submitted fish will be the winner. In the event neither Angler has another fish, the winner will be decided by who caught their fish first. All Anglers must have their metadata (time and location settings) turned on in their phones.
A registered Angler may protest another’s catch by submitting a WRITTEN report to the tournament committee via the WP Tournaments App or the Tangier Classic website. A protest must be submitted no later than 4:00pm on Sunday. In the event of a protest, the report will be presented to a panel of 3 judges to make the decision. All protests will be finalized on Sunday before the awards ceremony. The judges’ decisions will be final.
Fish are to be measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail at the longest point. According to Maryland regulations you may pinch the tail. All Anglers need to be careful not to cover the nose or tail of the fish to assure we can properly determine the length of the fish. All fish will be measured to the nearest 1/8th inch. The daily photo identifier MUST be visible in all photos!
All fish must be measured with an official Tangier Classic measuring stick which will be provided at the Captain’s meetings. You may also have us pre-approve your Hog Trough or other measuring device at one of the 4 Captain’s meetings. If you’re using a measuring device other than a Tangier Classic official measuring stick, and it was not approved beforehand, your submissions will be disqualified. A form must be completed and signed by a Tournament Official once the measuring device is approved. These forms will be kept on file by the Tangier Classic Committee. In the event a fish exceeds the provided measuring stick, an angler may use another measuring device of their choice in combination with the Tangier Classic measuring stick. The additional measuring device will need to be approved by a Tournament Official prior to the picture being accepted. It is recommended that you have us pre-approve a secondary measuring device if you intend to target fish exceeding the length of our provided measuring sticks. This will help avoid delays in the judging process.
Tournament Officials and Judges reserve the right to examine the metadata of any photo image to confirm the validity of a claim. Photos with edited or missing metadata may be disqualified at the Officials’ discretion. It is important that all anglers make sure the metadata is turned on in their phones before fishing.
All Anglers fishing the Tangier Classic must be aware of the regulations for the state waters which they’ll be fishing. The submissions will be judged in accordance with Maryland regulations. However, if an Angler is fishing in Virginia, they must follow the Virginia regulations when keeping a fish. If a fish qualifies under the Maryland regulations for the tournament, but is not legal in Virginia, the fish MUST be released after a photo submission. As noted above, all prize-winning fish must be caught in accordance with Maryland State regulations and meet the legal-size limits of each species.
It is the Angler’s responsibility to obtain all licenses/permits required to fish in this tournament. Please take special note for the required Cobia permits when fishing in Virginia waters. Also, if an Angler holds a Maryland fishing license and plans to fish in Virginia waters, they will need to obtain a VFIP number. Both the VFIP and Cobia permits are free and can be obtained online. MRC.VIRGINIA.GOV/FIP
All Anglers will fish at their own risk. All Anglers agree to indemnify and hold harmless all members of the Tangier Classic Fishing Tournament board, committee, subcontractors, sponsors, and their agents and employees from all liability, loss, or damage they may suffer as a result of this fishing tournament.
Failure to comply with any rule or regulation of the tournament, or Maryland State fishing guidelines, may cause the disqualification of an Angler or the Anglers catch. Any registered Angler so disqualified will not be entitled to any prizes or entry refund.
