All Anglers are permitted to fish 2 out of 3 days. All Anglers must declare their one lay day by 6:00 a.m. the day of by sending an email to tangierclassic@gmail.com.
Anglers may fish anywhere within the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries regardless of division.
Powerboats must launch from Wicomico, Somerset, or Accomack counties.
Kayaks may launch from anywhere within the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
Light tackle jigging/casting, live or dead bait, light tackle bank trolling, and fly fishing is all permitted. Deepwater trolling with inline planers, downriggers, planer boards, mojos, parachutes, and other heavy lures over 3oz is NOT permitted. Bait fishermen MUST use non-offset circle hooks per the MD regulations. Trolling light bucktails, jigs, and spoons is also permitted. A maximum of 5 rods may be used when trolling.
Everyone fishing on a boat must be registered for the tournament. All Anglers MUST attend one of the 3 Captain's meetings in order to receive their tournament official measuring stick, tournament handbook, and Captain's bag. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the Captain’s meetings, you must check in with a committee member before fishing. Registration can be completed online by visiting the "Registration" section of our website or in-person at a Captain's meeting.
You MUST register for the tournament with the same email address that you will use during the tournament to submit eligible fish. Not doing so may result in fish submissions not being recorded properly to your stringer.
The Tournament Committee reserves the right to refuse the registration of any Angler.
Powerboat Division: $65
Kayak/SUP Division: $65
Kids Division: $30
Kids registering for the Kids division will fish as individuals, they cannot fish the Kids division while also fishing in the Kayak division, or on a team in the Powerboat division. A kid can, however, enter the Powerboat or Kayak division if they choose to for $65, but they will be competing against adults. A kid who has entered the Kids division may fish from either a powerboat or a kayak.

The winners of each division will be decided by the top three two-day (5) fish stringers. A two-day stringer may consist of (2) Striped Bass and (2) slot sized Red Drum. A stringer may NOT consist of a Bull Red Drum or a Cobia. All other eligible species may be submitted to make up your stringer so long as they are of legal size per Maryland regulations. Fish may be submitted via the Tangier Classic app or measured in person by judges at the American Legion.
Please consider catch and release.
A fishing team may consist of up to 5 Anglers. Anglers fishing on a team will submit their fish individually to build their own stringer (the personal stringer is what will be used to judge the Calcuttas). This means an individual Angler is both fishing for themselves, as well as their team. Therefore they can simultaneously win the division as part of a team, and a Calcutta on their own. If an Angler does not participate as part of a team, they will only build their own stringer. In the event an Angler fishes on their own, they will be able to win the division as well as Calcuttas independently. Anglers fishing in the Kayak or Kids divisions may NOT build a fishing team for the tournament. Anglers fishing in the kids division will NOT be able to contribute to a powerboat team’s stringer. Kids cannot fish in two divisions simultaneously.
Tangier Classic is a hybrid catch/photo tournament. Anglers will have the choice to submit photos of their catch via the Tangier Classic app, by emailing them to tangierclassic@gmail.com or have their fish physically judged at the American Legion. Anglers may keep their fish or release them. All submissions will be judged based on Maryland State regulations meaning they must meet the minimum size requirements of a legal fish in Maryland to qualify. If fishing in Virginia waters, anglers must be aware of the Virginia State regulations when keeping a fish. All photos will be reviewed as they’re submitted. If the graduations of the measuring device are visible, the fish will be measured from that point and adjusted accordingly. Fish will be measured to the nearest 1/8th of an inch. The nose and tail MUST be completely visible. If we cannot determine the length of a submission it will be disqualified. All daily winners will be tentatively announced that day and will be finalized on Sunday after the protest period has ended.
A registered Angler may protest another’s catch by submitting a report to the tournament committee via email to tangierclassic@gmail.com before lines in the following day (5:00am Saturday and Sunday), or by the time judging ends on Sunday (4:00pm). In the event of a protest, the report will be presented to a panel of 3 judges to make the decision. All protests will be finalized on Sunday before the awards ceremony. The judges’ decisions will be final.
In the event of a tie, the Angler with the next largest submitted fish will be the winner. In the event neither Angler has another fish, the winner will be decided by who submitted their catch first. It is important all Anglers make sure their time and location settings are turned on in their phones.
Tournament officials/judges reserve the right to examine the metadata of any photo image to confirm the validity of a claim. Photos with edited or missing metadata may be disqualified at the officials’ discretion. It is important that all Anglers make sure the metadata is turned on in their phones before fishing.
All fish must be measured with an official Tangier Classic 48” measuring stick which will be provided at the Captain’s meetings. You may also have us pre-approve your Hog Trough or other measuring device at one of the 3 Captain’s meetings. If your measuring device isn’t approved beforehand your submissions will be disqualified. A form must be completed, signed by a committee member, and submitted via email to tangierclassic@gmail.com once a measuring device is approved. In the event a fish exceeds the provided measuring stick, an Angler may use another measuring device of their choice in combination with the TC measuring stick. The additional measuring device will need to be approved by the committee prior to the picture being accepted.
Fish are to be measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail at the longest point. According to the Maryland regulations, you may pinch the tail. All Anglers need to be careful not to cover the nose or tail of the fish to assure we can properly determine the length of the fish. All fish will be measured to the nearest 1/8th inch.
All Anglers fishing Tangier Classic must be aware of the regulations for the state waters which they’ll be fishing. The submissions will be judged in accordance with Maryland regulations. However, if an Angler is fishing in Virginia they must follow the Virginia regulations when keeping a fish. If a fish qualifies under the Maryland regulations for the tournament but is not legal in Virginia, the fish MUST be released after a photo submission. As noted above, all prize-winning fish must be caught in accordance with Maryland State regulations and meet the legal size limits of each species.

It is the Angler’s responsibility to obtain any and all licenses/permits required to fish in this tournament. Please take special note for the required Cobia permits when fishing in Virginia waters. Also, if an Angler holds a Maryland fishing license and plans to fish in Virginia waters, they will need to obtain a VFIP number. Both the VFIP and Cobia permits are free and can be obtained online. All Anglers will fish at their own risk/discretion. Tournament officials reserve the right to cancel any or all fishing days. In the event all three days are not fishable, the tournament will move to the following weekend, DATE TBD. If at least one day is fishable, the tournament will continue.
All Anglers will fish at their own risk. All Anglers agree to indemnify and hold harmless all members of the Tangier Classic Fishing Tournament committee, sponsors, and their agents and employees from any and all liability, loss, or damage they may suffer as a result of this fishing tournament.
Failure to comply with any rule or regulation of the tournament or law/regulation of Maryland State fishing guidelines may cause the disqualification of an Angler or the Anglers catch. Any registered Angler so disqualified should not be entitled to any prizes or entry refunds.
